Dressing for formals can cost a pretty penny. So a Greeneville church group is helping teenage girls get dressed for less.
The Asbury United Methodist Women’s group is hosting the “Blessed Dressed Prom Closet.” Organizers transformed the Greeneville Federal Bank on Irish and Summer Streets into a prom boutique. For a ten dollar donation, girls can shop the boutique to buy a formal gown or party dress.
“Everybody was like oh can I help you with this,” says 15-year old Megan Davis.
Volunteers greet the girls at the door and help them try-on donated gowns and party dresses. Shoppers can also accessorize their outfit with a purse, shoes, and jewelry for no additional charge.
Megan’s grandmother Coleen Harris says this is the best way to shop since teens today have many formals events.
“I bring her to a place like this and let her shop,” says Harris. “You know go to the mall, go to the stores and give her a budget,” Harris adds.
According to USA Today, most girls spend between 150 to 300 dollars on their prom dresses. Blessed Dressed organizers say the Prom Closet idea was modeled after a similar ministry in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.
The Asbury United Methodist Church’s “Blessed Dressed Prom Closet” runs today through Saturday.
