PREVIEW: SmartFIX Plans Underway
02:29 PM – Apr 30, 2008
There are major changes down the road for Interstate 40 through Knoxville.
Tri-Cities commuters traveling to west toward Knoxville, or parts south of there should be prepared to take a major detour along I-640.
The Tennessee Department of Transportation’s SmartFIX 40 Project started Thursday morning at 12:01 am.
Traffic officials have completely shutdown the area stretching from James White Parkway (Exit 388) to Hall of Fame Drive (Exit 389).
Motorists can expect that portion of I-40 to be closed for at least 14 months. This will give TDOT workers time to widen I-40 to six through lanes and four auxiliary lanes.

Officials say the SmartFIX Project is an accelerated construction process. The $190 million project will have contractors working around the clock.
