Food Banks, Food Pantries And Other Agencies Feeling Pinch
05:40 AM – May 05, 2008
Food banks, food pantries and other organizations that aim to serve people in need are also beginning to feel the pinch. The food bank provides commodities to shelters and food pantries throughout 11 Southwest Virginia localities. Ken Alfrey, director of Not By Bread Alone food pantry in Bristol, Tenn., said the increased costs borne by food banks have affected the pantry’s operation. Alfrey said the money he spends buying food from the food banks has gone up because their donations have decreased, and they’ve been forced to purchase more food to maintain stock levels.
