05/11/09: Doctors Prescribe Expansion Plans for Woman and Children’s Hospital

Original YNN Buffalo Air Date: 05/11/09
A runny nose brought little Aiden and his parents to Delaware Pediatrics in North Buffalo. If his cold gets worse, he could end up at Woman and Children’s Hospital Downtown.
Doctor Steven Lana spearheaded a 2002 campaign to expand the Bryant Street campus for a $60 million dollar ambulatory program.
Lana is part of an exploratory group of doctors looking to diagnose ways to improve Woman and Children’s Hospital. Parts of the century old campus are not keeping up with the times.
The hospital owns four houses on Hodge Street near Elmwood Avenue that would be torn down for the project. Expansion opponents object to parking problems and changing the neighborhood’s historic landscape.
The expansion plan is running into road blocks with several neighborhood groups around the hospital campus. So they’re considering a Plan B to expand at the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus.
Expansion supporters hope to offer better care for kids like Aiden by 2010.
