07/16/08: Johnson City Alternative Calendar Schools Head Back to Class

School bells are ringing for students at two Johnson City, TN schools.
Woodland and South Side Elementary schools kick off the 2008-2009 school year Wednesday at 8:15a.m.
There are approximately 900 students in the alternative calendar or “year-round” schools. Dr. Debra Bentley serves as Johnson City Schools Supervisor of Instruction and Communications. She says the schools are maxed out with 400 students at South Side Elementary and 500 at Woodland. The majority of the students hail from immediate zone areas although Woodland Elementary accepted several tuition students in the 2007-2008 academic school year.
Johnson City Police and school crossing guards will be on hand to help slow vehicle traffic around the schools starting Wednesday morning.
School administrators are asking drivers to heed posted safety signs around the Tree Streets and Indian Ridge Road.
Woodland and South Side students spend nine-weeks in school before breaking for two week-long Fall and Spring intercessions.
