A new attraction is coming to J. Fred Johnson Park in Kingsport.
Work begins Monday on the $815,000 Veterans Memorial slated for the area near the stadium.
The project will honor those killed in World War I through Operation Iraqi Freedom. The memorial will be a plaza of white granite with six seven-foot tall granite tablets.
The tablets will hold the inscribed names of the 347 Kingsport area residents who paid the ultimate price in the line of duty.
A large American flag will stand guard above the memorial as a reminder of these dedicated men and women’s devotion to the U.S.
Four granite boulders will also stand at the site symbolizing the extreme conditions of war under which the Kingsport soldiers gave their lives.
Organizers are still collecting donations for the project.
