07/30/08: Sullivan County Rescue Horse Auction

The saying “healthy as a horse” has a profound meaning at a Sullivan County stable. It’s now the home for six abused horses looking for new owners.
A year ago the horses were in poor health and struggling by the roadside at the B&H stables. Stables co-owner Heather Smith has worked to rehabilitate the horses over the past year. Smith rented space out to a woman who fell behind on boarding and treatment for at least 19 horses.
Now there are six horses remaining from the sickly group. The horses were malnourished, covered in rain rot, and in desperate need of medical attention. Smith says the horses were only given alfalfa cubes, mints and in some cases jelly beans to eat. That sugary treat was the inspiration behind the name for one of the horses called “Jellybean.” When the horses were turned over to her, Smith says they were emaciated and costly to clean up.
It takes $100 a month to house, feed and treat the horses. So far the B&H stables spent $35,000 to help the animals get trotting on the road to good health. Smith says she’s ready to pack up and move to Nashville. So the horses must go.
The B&H Stables are auctioning off the horses Tuesday:
