08/01/08: School Shoppers Cash In on Tax Free Deals

Shoppers looking for back-to-school deals are already hitting Tennessee, Virginia and North Carolina for the tax free weekend. The shopping holiday runs from 12:01 a.m. Friday, August 1 and ends on Sunday, August 3 at 11:59 p.m.
All weekend long shoppers can save almost 10 percent on clothing, computers, school and art supplies.
Early bird shoppers looking for back-to-school deals poured into the Wal-Mart on Browns Mill Road.
“Tonight will be very busy and then Saturday. But we’re expecting about 25-percent increase in customer traffic and sales,” said Wal-Mart #1080 Manager Keith Davidson.
Many parents are filling their shopping carts with everything from paper, pens, markers and calculators.
The tax-free exemption works on clothing and school items under $100 and computers under $1,500. Tri-Cities shoppers looking to beat the rush say it pays to shop early.
“It’s so crowded and things get gone and you can’t find what you’re looking for so just beat the rush,” said Carolyn Turner of Johnson City.
“It saves you money on the taxes and I enjoy shopping with my grand kids,” said Johnson City’s Sharon Carter. She’s looking for pre-kindergarten supplies for her little granddaughter.
The National Federation of Retailers estimates the average family will spend around $600 on back-to-school supplies.
