An Elizabethton group has fed children all summer long, now they’re seeking to prepare kids for the classroom this fall.
The Summer Boys and Girls or “B.A.G” program feeds up to 130 children a day around Carter County and Elizabethton.
Weekdays four volunteers from The Guard Your Heart Abstinence Program fill a mobile unit with juice boxes, sandwiches, pudding cups and lunchtime favorites. They then drive around to several low-income housing communities including Lynnwood, Linnridge, Arney Hill and South Hill Apartments.
There’s no registration required to receive the bag lunches. All children and their parents have to do is show up when the mobile unit rolls around their neighborhood.
Several Tri-Cities area churches contribute to the Summer B.A.G. program. This includes, Oak Street Baptist, United Methodist, Sims Hill Baptist, Eastside Hill Freewill Baptist and Blue Springs Christian Church.
Hunter Memorial Baptist Church parishioners and volunteers make sandwiches and assemble snack bags to be distributed to children in need.
Summer B.A.G. organizers want to get kids ready for school. Friday they will deliver backpacks with the lunch sacks. But they’re asking for a little help collecting school supplies to stuff 130 backpacks.
