08/26/08: Two NE TN Counties Brace For Budget Cuts And Tax Hikes

Budget and tax talk is on the minds of many Tri-Cities area residents.
Hawkins and Washington County, Tennessee officials are tackling tax rate hikes and budget cuts.
Monday night, Hawkins County officials confirmed budget cuts are on the horizon. At the same time, Washington County, Tennessee officials are calling for higher property taxes for homeowners.
The Washington County Commissioner gave the green light to raise taxes 10-cents bringing it up to $2.45.
Officials plan to dive the ten cents between schools, debts and the county’s general fund.

Washington County officials say 44% of the general fund will go toward Johnson City Schools.
Hawkins County officials are bracing for budget cuts. County leaders plan to take out 10% of the public services. The change will impact fire, EMS, and the sheriff’s department.
