09/05/08: Gustav Evacuees Return To The Gulf Coast

UPDATED at 1p.m. Hard Road Ahead For Gustav Evacuees Headed Back To “Big Easy” BY NICKI MAYO, Tricities.com
Approximately 400 Hurricane Gustav evacuees headed home Friday morning from Kingsport.
Your Tri-Cities News Source was on hand as eight buses rolled out of the Kingsport Civic Center parking lot carrying hurricane evacuees back to Louisiana.
The American Red Cross of North East Tennessee workers and volunteers started piling people onto the busses around five a.m. The vehicles pulled off around 6:30a.m. Red Cross officials welcomed in nearly 400 evacuees Sunday to the Kingsport Civic Center and various churches and rescues across the Tri. More than 6,200 Gulf Coast evacuees made their way to the Tennessee during the week.
Organizers say it took a team effort to supply the busses, food or shelter for the displaced evacuees. Still, it’s been a hard road for many evacuees headed back to the Big Easy. They’re returning to a major clean-up.
The Associated Press reports Hurricane Gustav knocked out power to 800,000 homes across Louisiana.
So far, there are 16 reported deaths here in the United States and 94 people lost their lives in the Caribbean. ###
