09/11/08: Putt Putt Tournament Takes A Swing At Accelerated Reading

Some Washington County, Tennessee students are taking a swing at the greens to boost their accelerated reading numbers.
Fall Branch School students are warming up for the “Putt-Putt For Reading” Tournament Thursday in Kingsport.

Registration kicks off Thursday at 5pm at the Putt Putt Golf & Games on West Stone Drive. Tee-time is at six.
The tiny golfers are teeing off to raise money to buy books for the school’s accelerated reading program.
Fall Branch School administrators have set an accelerated reading goal for students. wants its 317 students to read 25 books a piece this academic year. That’s 7,925 books by summer 2009. This is a school-wide goal for the school. So far there are 20 teams with 80 students registered to participate.
Mountain State Health Alliance donated miniature golf equipment to help the students practice for the putt putt tournament. Area businesses such as M&M Woodworking, Hamlet Watson and Dillow Taylor are also backing the golf-literacy program.
The Accelerated Reading program instructs students to read books and take test based on the literature. Each book is worth at least one point. Students are also tested on the literature. Their test scores translate into points that can me exchanged for prizes at the “AR” store.
Teachers are opening the putt putt tournament to students outside Fall Branch School, to encourage Accelerated Reading across the Tri-Cities. Registration kicks off Thursday at 5pm at the Putt Putt Golf & Games on West Stone Drive. Tee-time is at six.
