10/03/08: Kingsport Lifeguard Awarded Carnegie Medal

A Sullivan County lifeguard is honored for what she does the best… saving a life.
Kingsport’s Lindsey Witherspoon is being honored with the Carnegie Medal. Witherspoon is one of 73 Carnegie medalists being recognized this year for a heroic deed.
Tennessee Congressman David Davis presented Witherspoon with a Congressional statement back in March after she dived into action at Warriors Path State Park.
December 26, 2007 she jumped into action at Fort Patrick Henry Lake to pull a woman to safety.
The trained lifeguard swam 75-feet out to the car and pulled the 20-year old woman out. The driver reportedly plowed her into the lake from an adjacent parking lot.
Now the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission is honoring Witherspoon for her bravery and courage.
The Carnegie Medal is awarded throughout the United States and Canada to those who risk their lives to an extraordinary degree while saving or attempting to save the lives of others. So far, 9,224 people have received the heroic honor since 1904.
