10/03/09: Buffalo Delta Sigma Theta “Save Darfur” Walk-A-Thon Raises $650

More than 400,000 civilians have been killed over the past five years in the genocide in Darfur. This weekend a Western New York group is taking steps to raise awareness of atrocities.
The Buffalo Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority hosted a five kilometer Walk-A-Thon at the University of Buffalo. More than one hundred volunteers laced up their shoes to complete 25 laps around the indoor track at UB’s Alumni Arena.
“We’re trying to bring awareness about the situation. And hopefully we can bring some change and attention to what’s going on in Darfur,” said UB graduate student Jamil Crews.
Walk-A-Thon organizers say although Darfur is on the other side of the world, injustice anywhere hurts everyone.
“The more information that we can get out there concerning the genocide in Darfur, will eventually put pressure on world leaders to take a stance and do something about the genocide that has been plaguing Darfur for the past six years,” said chapter president Robyn Tate.
“You gotta keep walking, right now. Even though I’m not in the track right now I don’t want to loose pace. We gotta save everybody,“ said UB alumn Terric Richardson walking in place.
Some Walk-A-Thon participants say they are committed to ending the violence in Darfur, one step at a time
