‘Going Green’ could save you some green if you looking to get around the Twin Cities.
Bristol Tennessee and Virginia transit are offering free service and other treats Tuesday.
If you’re looking for a ride to shops around Exit-7, Bristol Mall or even the Bristol Regional Medical Center you can hold on to your money.
The Bristol Tennessee and Virginia transit systems are honoring customers and encouraging others to get on the bus with free fare all day long. It’s part of the cities’ fourth annual Customer Appreciation Day.
The Downtown Transfer Station on State Street will host a live performance by the Southern-76th band and several drawings. The festivities run from 11 a.m. to 1p.m. with free lunch to anyone riding the city transit system.
“I missed it last year ‘cause I had already eaten,” said Bristol, Virginia’s Orlin Jenkins. The retiree is excited about the free rides and lunches. Jenkins has relied on the public transit or the past decade and says the bus drivers keep him coming back.
“They are very nice all of them are good on both sides, Virginia and Tennessee,” Jenkins added. There are five Tennessee buses and four on the Virginia side carrying more than 100 passengers to popular spots around the twin-cities.
“A lot of them are senior citizens a lot of them are disabled some of them may not have drivers license,” said Wes Ritchie with the Bristol Tennessee Transit System.
Bristol transit officials say customer appreciation day is a way to reward customers for ‘going green’ by using mass transit.
“You get more people on a bus going the same direction; it’s less cars and less congestion clogging up the highways,” said Ritchie. “That means less pollution going up in the air and less fuel being used,” he added.
According to Bristol transit authorities, the buses help reduce pollution and promote cleaner air by producing 95% less carbon monoxide. ###
