Slick roads and fallen leaves can lead to dangerous driving conditions. Johnson City Streets Department is launching its annual fall leaf removal program.
Public works officials say the leaves often cause driving hazards and sewer issues. Leaves mix with wet icy roads to cause hazardous driving conditions. It’s easy to hit a slippery patch at the bottom of a hill or possibly fish-tail trying to turn a corner. Spinning tires can make it difficult to steer and control a vehicle.
The Car Care Council advises the best way to prepare for fall driving is to check your tires, brakes and wipers before heading out on the road. You’ll also want to treat piles of leaves the same way you approach standing water. That’s because there’s no way to gage how deep or what’s underneath the leaves.
Johnson City has about a dozen trucks hitting the streets to wrangle bags of leaves. The street crews plan to canvass communities at least twice to pick up bags of leaves between now and December 19th.
The leaf removal program spans three zones across greater Johnson City and Washington County, Tennessee.
