The Center for Disease Control reports 11 people died from fireworks-related injuries in 2006. That year there were 9,200 firework-related trips to the emergency room. 37% of those injuries were hand and fingers. Eye, head and face injuries made up 46% percent.
Tennessee State Marshal Leslie Newman released a reminder on the importance of fireworks safety. • Never allow children to play with or ignite fireworks. • Read and follow all warnings and instructions. • Be sure other people are out of range before lighting fireworks. • Only light fireworks on a smooth, flat surface away from the house, dry leaves, and flammable materials. • Never try to relight fireworks that have not fully functioned. • Keep a bucket of water and a garden hose nearby in case of a malfunction or fire.
The National Fire Protection Association reports men made up 75% of the fireworks-related injuries back in 2006.
