I was have too much fun hanging with old friends that dodged several hella 😬 cringe convos. But one that caught me was about my hair texture and being Black.

HIM: Girl you got some curly hair. What are you mixed with?

ME: Black and Black ✊🏾❤️🖤💚.

HIM: Nah like what island? Like Dominican, Trini ... Creole or something, right?

ME: Nope my people are Black from Mississippi in the south. But you know many African folks got hella colonized and mingled with indigenous folks in the south and the islands too. In the end, "Black" works for tons of us because we're African people, just spread out 🌍.

I've been finding interesting ways to educate folks on the Pan-African diaspora. My goal is that we always see our African origin as our strength, not something to try to explain away.

Oh and I also 💯 hate the texturism and colorism discussions. All hair is pretty hair. All skin is pretty skin.

🍊 CBT 2024 = 2000s fam I LOVE the adults we’ve become.

The 14th triennial Syracuse University Coming Back Together (CBT) reunion weekend was so much fun.

As a former student leader and advocate I appreciate this celebration of ‘CUSE Black and Latino alumni. We have so many superstars in our community.

My 2024 CBT experience was a SUper quick road trip. It’s nostalgic and brings back so many great memories of being a kid from Baltimore going to this big university in Central New York. I didn’t have a built-in legacy community. I wasn’t from NYC. I wasn’t in the academic program I aspired to join. This was the first time I had to build my community from scratch. So I got involved in the Student African American Society, The Black Voice, The Black Communications Society, WAER Radio and C7 News on Citrus TV (formerly known as “Orange TV”). Being extremely extroverted is my superpower.

Seeing my 2000s ‘CUSE fam means so much to me. The 80s and 90s alumni joke about how we seldom show up to these events, but please know any Black or Latino person that graduated ‘CUSE between 2000-2009 has been through A LOT. Technology changes, Y2K, 9/11, combatting residual racism, rolling recessions, student debt and more has stunted some life milestones. Navigating the young adult transition was on some BS. None of us look like what we were carrying those undergrad years and through the 2000s.

To my 2000s fam, I LOVE the adults we’ve become because baayyybeeeeee we’ve overcome A LOT.

🪡🧵 Feeling crafty. Ok so about that '70s themed party. I needed an outfit, but didn’t really want to buy something new. So I DIY’ed this flower child hippy look with two $9 shirts from @Kohls and some groovy psychedelic shades and a lime green bandana from from the beauty supply store.
BTW, question for the original '70s Afro wearers. How did y'all get your afros to stand up? My curls refused to give me a fro 😞😞

Hundreds of Black women filled the Shiloh Baptist Church Family Life Center to honor Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton, Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks, DC Former Mayor Sharon Pratt and Cora Masters Barry. I had the honor of being a guest of INSPR Media CEO Enid Doggett and sitting at #TheCoolKidsTable. #AFROHighTeaDC

#ThatAwkwardMoment when you're teaching students that SOT = sound on tape, and then you realize that they were born in 2004 and probably have never encountered a TAPE before. OMG the flashbacks I just had remembering working on everything from 8-track carts, 3/4, beta and DVC Pro tapes before we FINALLY arrived in the land of memory sticks, cards and digital storage clouds. Ask me about hauling mailroom crates filled with heavy beta tapes around the BET campus right after that white powder scare at the Brentwood Post Office. Y'all #JournoLife comes at you fast.

🎬Lights. Camera. Action! A new documentary celebrates the history of Morgan State University. I had the honor of attending the world premiere of "History of A National Treasure" at Maryland Public Television. The film will air during MPT's "HBCU Week 2024" from September 2-8, along with more than 30hrs of programming dedicated to recognizing HBCUs.

This is year's HBCU Week includes 12 premiere films across MPT's tv, social media, and online platforms. It also expanded its themes beyond history and education to include films on HBCU contributions to the arts, music, and sports. Follow #HBCUWeekNow for details.

Side note: I'm slowly learning the venues around DC, so now I know to avoid the center nosebleeds at Capital One Arena for non-sports events. Too many view obstructions and no monitors for that area.

I took some time to talk with some @smpagwu student journos about newsroom DEI, audience challenges and changing the culture of news coverage. These are VERY touchy subjects and y'all know I've been on both sides of this as a journalist and a #JournoLife activist. I'm really encouraged to see young journos take a proactive approach to responsible journalism and caring about the community they cover and serve. I wish my peers had done this when I was in undergrad😞🍊.
