Johnson City moves forward on a multi-million dollar project to connect traffic near the campus of East Tennessee State University.
Traveling north along Tennessee Street will lead you to a T-stop at Lamont Street.
Drivers have two options: east or west.
Northbound drivers are limited when trying to get to West Market Street and John Exum Parkway.
In 18 months, drivers may be looking beyond the three way stop, into a four lane street.
Johnson City engineers plan to extend Tennessee Street to run parallel to Hillcrest Drive. Construction started this week on the $4,838,775.31 project.
Elizabethton-based company Summers-Taylor Incorporated will oversee the 18 month extension. Johnson City engineers say the north-south connector will alleviate traffic problems beyond Tennessee Street.
Workers will excavate, grade, pave and realign area side streets such as Pactolas Rd., Main St, Lehigh St., Wilson St., Hamilton St. and Lamont St.
Summers-Taylor Incorporated will construct four, 12 foot lanes on Tennessee Street while adding curbs, gutters and sidewalks.
Contractors will also overlay 1,725 feet of Hillcrest Drive and West Market Street.
Johnson City engineers tell Your Tri-Cities News Source the extension project originally started as a T-DOT project back in the 60’s and late 90’s.
Tennessee Street was built to connect ETSU traffic to Interstate-26. Now the city wants to connect north and south traffic with a main thoroughfare.
